Coeliac Disease
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition where the immune system reacts abnormally when someone eats the protein gluten. If a person with coeliac disease consumes gluten, the lining of the small intestine will become damaged which can diminish the absorption of nutrients and lead to long-term health consequences. If left untreated, coeliac disease can eventuate to malnutrition, osteoporosis, infertility and cancer.
Common symptoms of coeliac disease include:
- Diarrhoea
- Unintentional weight loss
- Abdominal pain, bloating and gas
- Nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite
- Fatigue (usually due to anaemia)
