Stoma Management

A stoma is an opening that connects part of the bowel to the outside of the body. Bowel content is “re-routed” to exit through the stoma on the outside of the abdomen.

Colostomies and ileostomies are the most common types of stomas and can come about due to diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease and cancer.

Living with a stoma can seem daunting at first, but with appropriate help and support, many people go on to maintain a normal quality of life which can include going travelling and playing sport.

While it’s not always easy at first, with the right help and support, most people manage their stoma as part of their daily hygiene routine. It may take time and practice, but stomal therapy nurses and specialists can help with the adjustment process.

How a TDC dietitian can help you with stoma management:

  • Optimise your hydration through fluid and electrolyte modification.

  • Reduce your risk of stoma obstruction and learn how to manage a blockage if it happens to you.

  • Optimise your stoma output so it’s not too watery or too thick.

  • Modify your diet to reduce stoma odour and gas.

  • Correct for any deficiencies that may occur as an outcome of intestinal surgery.
