Lactose Intolerance
Lactose is a type of sugar found naturally in cow’s milk and other dairy products and is broken down by the enzyme lactase. People who don’t produce enough lactase in their gut are lactose intolerant. Symptoms can include stomach cramps, pain, gas and diarrhoea 20-30 minutes after lactose ingestion.
Lactose intolerance can also be caused by coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease and after a bout of gastro.
How a TDC dietitian can help you with lactose intolerance:
Provide you with a shopping list and recommendations for lactose-friendly brands.
Educate you about low-lactose dairy foods so you can enjoy foods like cheese again.
Work with you to help interpret food labels.
Discuss the use of supplements if appropriate for you.
Provide you with a personalised dietary planner to ensure your calcium and protein requirements are met.
